Based on excursions on the great Athabasca and North Saskatchewan rivers, Waterline originated from smaller works first undertaken on the Sturgeon River, a few kilometers southeast of Entwhistle, Alberta on a cool spring evening in early April 1998.
Waterline experiments with the notion of ‘the edge’- a concern borrowed from hard-edge abstract painting and reinforced by visual trends in graphic design. An element of play is at work in its very composition: the panels divide various painted sections that are then adjoined, brought together in peculiar arrangements through various chance elements. Dropping the pieces to see where they fall.
The interplay of stirring motions of illusory colour, soft wispy brushstrokes set starkly alongside deep ochers of raw earth all combine to create harmonious and balanced natural symmetries.
